The Technology Faculty provides a range of programs which would serve as suitable foundations for further studies in traditional trade areas, or for studies at university.

Students also have opportunities to participate in the Australian School Based Apprenticeship (ASBA) program in conjunction with their studies in a number of the courses.

The Technology courses offered at Dickson College include Tertiary (T) or Accredited (A) or Vocational (V) courses.


WORKSHOP TECHNOLOGIES
Automotive Technology  (A/V)

In the Automotive Technology course students develop knowledge and skills related to various types of engine and vehicle systems. This is an ideal course for students who want to learn about maintaining their own car!

At a professional level, the course provides a pathway into the automotive industry, providing credit towards Canberra Institute of Technology (CIT) automotive trade courses

General Construction         (A/V)

This course is aimed at students who may be seeking a career in the Construction Industry. The course provides students with the opportunity to develop their skills in the use of hand and power tools and in construction techniques with different materials and in the preparation of building sites.

Qualifications achieved in this course have national recognition.

Metal Technology (A)

This course is designed to develop metal construction skills to a high standard of accuracy and finish.  The work is suited to any student who wishes to gain knowledge of metals, especially steel, in a practical environment.  Students with skills associated with designing, constructing and repairing objects will be able to use them in many career areas, as well as the traditional fields of metalwork - such as Fitting and Machining or Engineering.


Wood Technology (A)

This course explores many aspects of woodwork, including: the correct use of hand and machine tools, methods of cabinet construction and finishing.  It also covers specialised areas of woodwork such as turning and restoration.  Students will have the opportunity to undertake projects and extend themselves with the special techniques required for this work.

Design and Graphic Communication (T/A)

This course will assist all students wanting to develop and/or improve their graphical communication and design skills.

Students will be able to undertake units in Engineering Drawing, Graphic Design, Computer Aided Drafting and Architectural and Environmental Studies, and could achieve a double major in this course by completing all seven units available.

The Design course also provides a foundation for studies leading to careers in fields such as architecture, graphic design, industrial design and engineering or any for any of the trade courses offered at the Canberra Institute of Technology.

Combining Workshop Technologies with Design and Graphic Communication

Students with a special interest in design aspects in the automotive, construction, metal or wood technologies or trades should consider undertaking some design units in the Design and Graphic Communication course, in addition to their other studies in this area.
