Sociology
Sociology explores the nature of the social systems and social interactions that comprise everyday life, with the goal of enabling students to critically analyse their world, and act in a constructive, socially conscious manner.
Our Sociology units are designed to help students develop critical thinking skills. Students are encouraged to reflect on their social context and to reconsider their assumptions about the world. Students are expected to develop their social awareness and an understanding of alternative points of view.
Units are offered at Accredited and Tertiary levels for Sociology. Accredited Sociology is for those thinking about a career in retail, a trade, the armed forces or any other industry that involves interpersonal interaction. Tertiary Sociology is for those intending to go to study at university or a tertiary institution. Sociology is not just relevant for Humanities and Arts subjects, but for all tertiary disciplines that require critical and creative thinking.
Generally students are required to take undertake both a research project (such as an essay, annotated bibliography or oral seminar) and an in-class test each term.
Year 11 students begin with Unit 1: Identity and Unit 2: Sociology of Social Justice; then they can complete the rest of the units in any order, depending on what is offered in any given year.

NOTE: Not all of these topics will be offered each year.
Students may study a Minor (two semesters) or a Major (four semesters) in Sociology.
When combined with Psychology units, students may study a Major/Minor (six semesters) or Double Major (eight semesters) in Behavioural Science.
