Principal's Report

Welcome to the last DC News of 2021. And what a year it has been! In this edition we celebrate all the awards our students have achieved over several end of year events. This includes BSSS Recognition of Excellence Ceremony, Year 12 Special Awards, Semester 2 Awards and Year Special Awards presented at Year 12 Graduation. Year 12 Graduation was a fantastic celebration of our College community, a big thanks to the students who performed on the night and co-hosted the evening, one of which had more Dad jokes than I.

On Wednesday evening we saw 347 students graduating with an ACT Senior Secondary Certificate. Sixty-one of these students have received additional Vocational Qualifications from a range of industry areas that have led to apprenticeships and employment. On 18 January next year, 219 of our graduating Year 12 students will also receive a Tertiary Entrance Statement (TES) or ATAR. TES information will be available to Year 12 students electronically via BSSS student profiles online. Actual TES certificates will be available for collection at the College from Monday 24 January. Any student who was unable to attend Wednesday evening’s graduation can collect their certificate(s) from the College from Monday 24 January. All the best Year 12 2021 for the future, stay in touch, we will miss you.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for all the support given to students and staff during 2021 and to wish our students and their families a happy and safe holiday break.

Warmest regards,

Craig Edwards

SWAG wins Highly Commended in ACTsmart Awards

It has been a difficult semester with many challenges but the Student Waste Action Group (SWAG) has not wavered in their dedication to help improve sustainability at Dickson College. The students have worked hard to develop a new waste management plan, hopefully to implement in the new year, and have envisioned ways we can revamp the green spaces around the school.

Their hard work was recognised recently at the ACTsmart awards, winning Highly Commended. Congratulations SWAG students on this well deserved award.

SIEC Graduation

Good morning to everybody. I am Nicole Escobar Santander and I am going to tell you about how my stay in Australia has been during the 8 months that I have been here.

First of all, I want to thank the SIEC teachers who helped me and taught me to improve the language and my parents for always encouraging me. I will be deeply grateful for that everyday of my life. Learning a new language is not as easy as it seems, but it can be done with perseverance and effort. For me, understanding another language is an art.

When I arrived in Australia I was a bit scared thinking about how I would communicate with the people around me, because I considered that I had a moderately good level of English, I did not know how wrong I was. As the days passed, I began to realize that they spoke with a completely different accent from what they taught me in my country, because they spoke like Americans do. That confused me a lot, it was like starting from the beginning for me.

In this time I learned more than I could ever imagine, starting with the kindness and respect they have given me. Being away from your home country can be completely challenging but I have found that Australians are very empathetic and respectful people, always willing to help. As a phrase well known in Mexico says: ‘Me recibieron con los brazos abiertos’ (“They welcomed me with lovely arms”, if I translate it to English) which means to give a warm welcome to people no matter where they come from.

I also learned that we should not feel frustrated and ashamed if we make mistakes in the learning process, that is what it is about, practicing every day because that is learning. Getting it wrong and trying again is very important.

Finally, my advice to new SIEC students is don't give up. Having the great opportunity to learn English in a native country is wonderful. Honestly, I never imagined being bilingual at my young age and the advantages that this would give me in my future school. I met new friends and their different cultures that are each beautiful.

Learning English or another language will always be a safe bet. Follow your dreams even if the road is hard, the success and satisfaction that it brings in the future is completely worth it. Strive to achieve your dreams and try to do it better every day.

My best wishes everyone!
Student Nicole Escobar Santander
