Acting Principal, Victoria Margrain, with the Dickson High School 60th Anniversary Class

Principal's Report
By Victoria Margrain

Yuma!
I’m looking after the principal’s desk at the moment while Craig is on long service leave, so it’s been a fantastic opportunity for me to see the school from a different angle.

DHS 60th Anniversary
I had the great pleasure last Friday of providing a tour for a group of around 50 alumni from “Dickson High School” prior to the establishment of the college sector system. What a joy it was to spend time with this lovely group of people and share their delightful reminiscence.
|
|
|
They’ve been in touch to thank us for hosting the tour and commented that it “brought back memories, but allowed us an insight into the broader differences, challenges and progression in education from the 1960’s and 70’s to the present time. The tour was indeed a terrific start to our very successful weekend of events celebrating the 60th Anniversary of Dickson High School.”
Carpark and Building Works
Building works continue around various spots in the school to upgrade and maintain our facilities. Preparations have begun for our new bike enclosure with the temporary fencing going up outside my window. The handover for the new carpark has suffered a few rain delays, like most things in Canberra at the moment, but it is nearing completion. It is always timely in term 4, when many students are now driving, to remind families to be proactive in shaping their young person’s driving behaviours. Our school policy has always been that students are not to spend time in the carpark. Movement between parked cars and the building should be safe and timely. It’s not an area that has active supervision throughout the day and it increases the risk to students and our community if students congregate there, so please remind your young people that they should only use the carpark to park their vehicle and enter/exit the building.
Parent Teacher Interviews – Feedback from Parents/Carers
We are hoping to collect some feedback from you about Parent Teacher Night, so ask if you could please complete the survey at this link (it’s a very quick one) https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdvHcusHtUaoXc1KT8oKGq6LFaiITZVYlid9DKHKxKGHXn7rA/viewform?usp=sf_link . We just want to make decision for next year based on what best meets the needs of our community.
Covid Safety Reminder
There have been a few changes to ACT Health’s and the Education Directorate’s Covid Safety settings. Whilst isolation requirements have been lifted in the general community, the Education Directorate still mandates that school staff are not to attend the workplace for 5 days after testing positive. As a school we would like to reiterate that students should stay home if they are sick. Please keep your young person home for at least five days if they have COVID-19, even if they are asymptomatic.

Inner North Cluster Indigenous Celebration
Students, teachers, support staff and families enjoyed Indigenous song and dance and a range of activities at the Inner North Indigenous Celebration. Activities developed by the primary and secondary schools in the cluster included: the exciting traditional game Burojin, face painting, weaving, bush tucker, damper making, drumming and community art. We also celebrated contemporary First Nations music and dance performed by Indigenous artists.
A big shout out to Dickson’s Indigenous student leaders who worked hard to make the day a remarkable success. Thank you Keamanee Byrnes, Georgia James, Emma Jauncey, Ariella Molchanoff, Ainsley Saunders, Ashton Hopkins, and Kai Chalmers.
It was indeed a CELEBRATION!

Jack H also won the 2x2x2 with 4.62 seconds (yes that is less than 5 seconds)! Hayden B was very close behind on 5.02s, then James H on 7.65s.
The 4x4x4 cube was own by Jack H on 46.66seconds, then James H on 2:12.52 (slightly over 2 minutes). Lincoln S solved in 5:48.00.

Physical Education and Outdoor Education News
This term Physical Education students had the opportunity to participate in a Taekwondo lesson. The aim of this experience was to introduce students to Taekwondo and to learn a bit about Korean culture. This experience was brought to the students free of charge by the Korean embassy and was facilitated by a recent Olympic Gold Medalist. While some students were a little apprehensive at first they all reported having a really enjoyable lesson.
In week 12 the Outdoor Education students went to Tomakin for their Surf Camp as part of their Planning and Management unit. Throughout the semester students have been developing their planning and management skills in order to learn how to plan their own camp. Students participated in Surfing, Kayaking and Stand Up Paddle Boarding. A great time was had by all with many students reporting it was their favourite camp so far.
A special thanks goes out to University of Canberra Pre-service Teacher Matt Jolley who volunteered his time and expertise for this camp. It is with the help of Volunteers like Matt, who enable camps and excursions to go ahead.
