Principal's Report

Yuma!

Classes have wrapped up for the semester but the pace at DC hasn’t slowed quite yet.  I was lucky enough to attend our IT Exhibition last Thursday.  The year 12 IT students celebrated what they have achieved in two years of coding, with displays of electronics and robotics, games and software programming.  It was a really fun event, even if I am pretty terrible at computer games.  The S46 Media Showcase for 2022 was on Wednesday night, featuring short films made by DC media students and what a fantastic event at Palace Electric Cinema.  The students have worked hard and achieved such a high standard, but this is what we have come to expect.  We are so proud of what our students can achieve with their amazing teachers guiding them.

Now we are looking forward to our end of year events, with upcoming celebrations for year 12 at formal and graduation.  It was good to see so many of our year 12s at the year 12 brunch.  This is a nice tradition where the teachers put on a special breakfast for Year 12 to wish them well. It is followed by the all-important final check of year 12 certification for each student, prior to the scaling process and ATAR results.

If you missed the last community update, you may not be aware that Craig Edwards has recently won a position in School Improvement Section of the Directorate, as Senior Director of School Review and Planning. Craig will do really important work to support schools in this role and it’s a great outcome for the Education Directorate, even if it means we have to manage without him at Dickson.  For now, it is a temporary position until the end of term 1 2023 but may be extended longer in 2023.  In typical Craig fashion, he has negotiated flexibility to attend all of our end of year events because he’s all about the students and wants to see them through these final important checkpoints.

Dickson College 2022 Art Exhibition

What a great night with a wonderful display of work from the Arts students at Dickson College. Thank you all to the visitors, staff and students that made this night such a success.  If you didn’t get a chance to join us, take a peek here at just some of the work.

Music News

The music students have been enjoying a number of great opportunities to perform this term. Several groups of students provided background vibe music for the Arts Showcase in week 15.
The Jazz Band played at Floriade in week 11 and more recently in week 16 performed at the ACT government Health awards at the National Museum of Australia. The band was well received by the audience and added to the atmosphere of the evening. It was their first performance outside of the school all year and they performed in a very professional manner. They will also be performing at the Year 12 graduation at the Canberra theatre on December 15.
Congratulations to these talented and hard working students!

IT News

The Women in ICT Award (WC) evening was held on the 11th of November. This event is one of many events held by WIC during the year to bring people together to champion women in Information and Communication industries. As part of this they offer an award to encourage female students in ICT subjects to continue in the field.

This year one of Dickson College’s students, Emma Alfonso, received the award. Emma has been studying a double major in IT both at Dickson and the University of Canberra with interest in areas ranging from robotics through to software design. Emma has also volunteered with outreach programs to advance women in STEM areas and completed work experience in the field.

We are proud of Emma, and wish her all the best with her future IT endeavours.

Fashion Parade

The fashion parade was a great success, students were stressed, nervous and anxious!  However, they all worked well together proudly showing off their amazing creations. They said it was such a memorable event and they found the courage to collaborate and enjoy the evening, once the nerves settled!

SAFETY ALERT
MUSHROOMS GROWING ON SCHOOL GROUNDS

Persistent wet weather has caused significant growth of mushrooms and fungi on school grounds. If children ingest mushrooms found in the playground this may be very dangerous.

 The issue
Persistent wet weather has provided ideal growing conditions for mushrooms and fungi. Different species of mushrooms are very difficult to identify and if consumed, can cause serious illness or death.

What do schools need to do?

Schools need to ensure they have established a system for monitoring school grounds for mushroom and fungi growth. Such monitoring can be included in the Daily Yard Checks conducted by BSO’s and supported by teachers whilst on playground duty.

What to do with mushrooms if they are found

Mushrooms should be picked using gloved hands or a gardening implement. Mushrooms should be placed into a plastic bag to prevent spores from spreading, then disposed into the garbage. Wash your hands and any tools which have come into contact with the mushroom.
Remove wild mushrooms before mowing, as mowing over mushrooms can spread them further.

Mushrooms growing on public land near the school

Mushroom growth on adjacent land should be reported to Access Canberra on 13 22 81

Symptoms of mushroom poisoning

Symptoms of mushroom poisoning can include stomach pains, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Symptoms may occur 6-24 hours after ingestion. In the case of Death Cap Mushrooms symptoms may subside for 1-2 days giving the impression of recovery however liver failure and death may occur.

What to do in the event of a confirmed or suspected consumption of a wild mushroom

If poisoning is suspected, an Ambulance or immediate attendance at the Hospital Emergency Department is required. Further information and advice can be sought by calling the Poisons Information Centre on 13 11 26 (24 hours a day, 7 days a week).
WATER SAFETY DURING STORMS

As Canberra continues to experience above average rainfall, the risk of flash flooding in our waterways is increased. Children and young people should be reminded to stay away from stormwater drains and pipes in the local areas and should be educated about the dangers of stormwater.

The issue

Stormwater drains and systems are dangerous and unpredictable during dry times however, the risks significantly increase after high rainfall. It is timely that we remind children and young people of the dangers associated with playing in or near in stormwater drains.

Stormwater risks

Children or young people playing around or near stormwater systems are at risk at any time in dry or wet weather.

Stormwater drains can be open channels and usually have no fencing, meaning they are easily accessible to children and young people.

Dangers and risks exist due to:
  • Water in the drains rising quickly and unexpectedly, even when it’s not raining in the local area.
  • Challenges related to children and young people exiting a stormwater drain quickly, if needed.
  • Shallow water being powerful and could knock a child or young person over.
  • Slippery surfaces due to slime build up increases risk of slips and falls.
  • Drains can contain pollution like debris, dangerous chemicals, and dangerous bacteria.

Storm education and water safety

Educating children and young people about the dangers of accessing or playing in and around Canberra’s urban waterway systems is vital.

Schools are encouraged to discuss water safety and stormwater dangers with students, particularly as Canberra experiences unusually high volume of rainfall. Parents should also be reminded through the school newsletter to talk with their children about the risks.

If stormwater blockages or overflow are an issue at or near your school

As heavy rains and debris place extra burden on the stormwater network, blockages and overflow can occur which can present danger to people and damage to property. If you see issues with the stormwater network at or near your school, call Access Canberra on 13 22 81 to arrange an inspection.

In a stormwater emergency
