Principal's Report

Be aware of the ‘silly’ season

Working with 16 - 18 year old young people can be interesting at times. With the onset of Spring, students gaining a licence to drive, year 12 concluding, students turning 18, and young relationships we see a cumulation of conditions that can lead to some ‘silly’ behaviours.

Perennially I call it ‘silly season’, and it is not new, it happens every year. The fact that we are noticing the seasonal behaviours here at the college is probably the best indicator we have had so far that we are transitioning out of the COVID-19 pandemic, to the ‘new normal’ whatever that is exactly, I am not sure.  What I do know though is that I want our students acting responsibly and being safe, particularly on our roads. This means following the road rules and college guidelines around the use of our carpark. Remember:
  • No loitering or gathering in the car park– park and go to class, or go to your car and leave
  • Speed limit in carpark is 10 km/h
  • Drivers driving recklessly will have their registration reported to ACT Police
You will notice our overflow car park is progressing well, and we anticipate that it will be open for use next term. Once the overflow car park is open our expectation is that all vehicles are parked in the spaces provided and not on any verges or nature strips. For 2023 in consultation with students and the School Board we will endeavour to introduce a free parking permit for our students.

I know the vast majority of our students do act responsibly and also check that their friends do the same. To ensure that everyone is safe on college grounds it is important that individuals take responsibility and report unsafe behaviour to the Front Office.

It has been a good week at the college and has definitely been lovely to see Spring arrive and year 12 AST students complete their exams. Our attention now flows to midsemester assessment, before heading into term 4, end of the school year, formal and graduation. The Year 12 Formal has been organised for the National Museum and the Year 12 Graduation for the Canberra Theatre.

I will be taking a little bit of a break (4 weeks long service leave) at the beginning of term 4. Victoria Margrain will be acting Principal while I am away. Take care and I look forward to being back at school term 4 for all the end of year events.

Kind regards,

By Craig Edwards

Schedule for Maths and Science crossline tests

All crossline tests will be held in the Gym and the venue for students with special provisions in S31. Please come to the venue five minutes prior to the starting time.

Students are required to attend all classes of subject areas other than Science and Tertiary Maths when they do not take tests. All Science and Tertiary Maths classes will be flexed in this testing period between 7th September and 12th September.

Any student that will not be able to attend a test at the scheduled time due to illness (including Covid), will have to let school know by sending an email at DicksonC.absences@ed.act.edu.au. The first option is to reschedule tests for later between 7th and 12th of September or Catchup sessions) by talking to either Head of SHAPE, Josephine Kim or Head of Maths, Chris Hammerer.

You must provide appropriate evidence to explain your absence from the assessment. For illness you require a medical certificate, for Covid you require evidence of registration from the ACT Health Department, and for other circumstances you are recommended to speak to your Engagement Advisor as soon as possible.

If you have any questions, please speak to either your Engagement Advisor or your classroom teacher.

Solomona Hamilton
National & International Swimming Representation
In August, Year 11 student Solomona Hamilton had the opportunity to represent the ACT at the National Schools Swimming Championships in Brisbane, followed by representing Samoa at the Junior Pan Pacific Swimming Championships in Hawaii, achieving some fantastic results.

At the National Schools swimming Championship Solomona made finals for 100m back stroke and freestyle, placing 9th overall for both. At the Junior Pan Pacific Swimming Championships, Solomona swam 6 individual events (50m free, 100m back, 100m free, 200m back, 200m free and 200m Individual Medley) plus 1 relay.

In the words of his mum Ivapene "He achieved a personal best for all 6 events and broke a national Samoan record for 16yr 200m backstroke. He was milliseconds away from breaking the 100m free record - but perhaps next time😊!"

Well done Solomona!

CareersXpo

On Wednesday 17th August Year 12 students attended an excursion to the Canberra CareersXpo at EPIC. There were exhibitors from many different areas including universities from all over Australia, employer organisations, trade providers and Government institutions. Our students were able to seek valuable career guidance and advice as well as trying some hands on activities such as horticulture, seeing inside an ambulance and an armoured vehicle, patting a police dog and experiencing how virtual reality can be used in training and careers. It was a great morning out and the students all looked inspired to face their futures with confidence!

Cultural Integrity Excursions to
National Museum of Australia and
Australian War Memorial
Yuma!  In week 5, Year 12 English classes studying Unit 4: Perspectives joined the Indigenous Culture and Languages classes for an excursion to the National Museum of Australia and Australian War Memorial, to explore the way narratives and events can be perceived differently with changing perspectives.  Students reflected on the differing approaches to First Nations representation in the two cultural institutions.  The importance of story and the connection to artefacts was particularly thought provoking.

In week 7, the Indigenous Culture and Languages classes were joined by students from Global Studies and Drama classes to visit the National Museum once again for the stunning ‘Connection’ exhibition and an Education Program about Indigenous Rights and Freedoms.  Students gained valuable insight into First Nations experiences and culture, and enjoyed a beautiful day out on Ngunnawal Country!

Outdoor Education News

On Friday 26th August Outdoor Education classes hiked to Square Rock in Namadgi National Park. Students planned this hike as part of the unit, Planning and Management. The weather was excellent and everyone had a great time. Outdoor Education students will be building on what they have learnt to plan a 3 day camp this semester.

There were volunteers who joined for the day. With the help of volunteers, excursions and camps are able to go ahead while keeping the costs down.
