Principal's Report

It was great to see all students return to onsite face-to-face learning last Monday 18 October. Students seem very happy to be back at college and kudos to them for being so compliant with the COVID Safety rules that are in place. I was very pleased to hear the ACT Chief Minister announce further easing of restrictions yesterday, so that end of year events and celebrations in schools can go ahead. I know students, staff, families, and myself are looking forward to these important events on our calendar. The first one will be our Fashion Parade and Arts Festival next Thursday evening 4 November, 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm.

A big thank you to the whole DC community for their patience, resilience, and agility through the period of Remote Learning this year.  The emails and messages of support from the community have been most appreciated by the staff and myself. I would like to also take this opportunity to thank the DC staff for their wonderful professionalism, focus on learning and student wellbeing, during what has been a difficult time. Today is World Teachers’ Day and we’ll be celebrating it together as a team, where we’ll drink coffee outside in the sun.

Take care everyone and I look forward to catching up with you at one of our end of year events.

 Regards,

Craig Edwards

Year 11 AST Trial

Y11 Tertiary students will sit an AST trial on Monday of week 8 (22nd November 2021).
This trial is COMPULSORY for any students intending on completing a Tertiary package.

For this trial, students will complete 2 of the 3 parts of the AST (Short-response and Multiple-choice)
It will run for the entire day beginning at 8:50am, concluding at approximately 3:30pm, with a break between the two tests.

The best way for students, and parents, to access information about the AST is via the AST 2022 GoogleClassroom page.  This will provide details about test times, venues, required equipment, AST protocol and access to special provisions (if required).
Please sign up to the AST 2022 GoogleClassroom (Class code: i4euaen).

IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT SPECIAL PROVISION:
Any student who believes there should receive special consideration MUST speak with the AST Coordinator, Christopher Hammerer.
To be awarded special provisions, students must go through a formal application process.
Please appreciate that the criteria for AST special provision is different than receiving special provision for college-based assessment.
Students will only be able to access special provisions for the AST (or the AST trials) if they formally register their intent to apply for special provision with the AST coordinator.
The best way to do this is via the GoogleClassroom page mentioned above.

If you have any further questions or queries, please sign up to the GoogleClassroom page AND please contact Christopher Hammerer.

Rubik’s Cube Competition

In term 3 we held our Rubik’s Cube Competition. Due to Covid we didn’t invite our feeder schools this year. Hopefully we can invite them next year.

All six entrants did the 3x3 cube in less than 100 seconds, so they beat Caroline.

From year 12, Andy Wang came fourth with 59.88 seconds and Lucy Teng earned third prize with 58.63 seconds.

The year 11s were even faster. Angus McNeilage came second with 34.78 second. The amazing Jack Hitchman won with 11.32 seconds. It takes me longer to mess it up than it takes him to solve it. Jack also won the 7x7 with 15 minutes and 15 seconds.

UNSW Maths Competition

This competition goes for three hours and only the most gifted maths students enter. Ethan F in year 12 earned a credit.

Our school is so awesome that everyone who entered earned a Credit or a Distinction.

Credits go to year 12 students Lana, Sol, Isla, Zara and Andy.

Distinctions go to year 12 students Lachlan, Jin, Rhyan, and Archie. Year 11 student Isaac W also scored a distinction.

Congratulations to all those Maths geniuses.

Library News

Although we have only had our wonderful students back on campus for a short time, there is a sense of anticipation as students busily complete the last of their assessment tasks. Teacher librarians Melinda and Lindy are here to help all students in these last busy weeks.

Students are reminded to return textbooks and other library resources as soon as possible. Students may keep textbooks that are needed for test week. All loans should be returned by Handback Day Thursday 25 November. Year 11 students are welcome to borrow for the holidays.

Thank you to everyone who has supported the Big Bewitching Book Sale! We have raised over $220 for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation. The book sale will continue during the term and there are still lots of great titles, especially fantasy and thriller.

We wish all students a happy end to the school year!

Preparing today’s learners for uncertainty – a webinar for parents | Tuesday 9 November 1.00pm AEDT

'Uncertainty tolerance' (UT), or how we process and respond to unknown or complex situations, is increasingly recognised as an essential workplace skill. Uncertainties in the workplace are ever-present and we’ve seen shared, global experiences of this with the uncertainties surrounding work during the COVID-19 pandemic.

On Tuesday 9 November Associate Professor Michelle Lazarus will discuss the impacts of UT on students, and outline some strategies to help parents to support their children to improve their UT to prepare them for their futures in further education and work. "Look after your mental health Australia." October is Mental Health Month and a reminder that we all benefit from looking after our own mental health and the mental health of our communities. It's also a reminder for us to reach out and connect with friends, family, workmates and those we care about.

R U OK? CEO Katherine Newton says before we ask someone if they're OK we need to feel well and able ourselves. "Consider what brings you joy, do something for yourself."

Mental Health Australia have developed digital and printable resources with ideas and activities to help you look after your mental health not only this month but every month.
Dedicated school buses and revised interim bus timetable from Monday 25 October 2021

Transport Canberra’s dedicated school bus services will recommence on Monday 25 October 2021. This includes ‘S’ trips that divert into schools.

Timings have changed for dedicated school services and the regular timetable. We are strongly encouraging families to check their school pack and plan ahead.

Special Needs Transport continues to run for those families that need this service.

A range of COVID Safe measures are in place to help keep students safe on public transport. Please remind families to familiarise themselves with these measures and talk to their children about them prior to the return to school.

From Monday 25 October 2021 buses will run to a revised interim timetable. This timetable is a similar frequency to the timetable that has been running over the past two months, but with some changes to timings to allow better connections for school students.

Light rail is continuing to run to its regular frequency but will see an increase in frequency from Monday 1 November 2021. This will assist with physical distancing on board. Customers will benefit from extended afternoon peak frequency on weekdays and increased frequency on Sunday mornings.

Consider walking or riding to school – or using a Part way point
Parents and carers may also consider alternative ways to get their children to school. If they live close by they can take advantage of the warmer spring weather and walk, ride or scoot to school!

Part way points are also a great way to get some exercise into children’s days for families that live a little further away and this also helps to ease congestion around schools. Parents or carers can simply drop their child at a point, or park and walk the rest of the way with them.

Park safely and legally
All 40km/h school zones are in place between 8am and 4pm Monday to Friday. Speed limits in school zones are there to ensure the safety of children by allowing motorists extra time to stop in an unexpected situation.
Parking across pedestrian crossings, corners, verges and double parking can block kids seeing the road.

School packs and timetable information
The revised interim timetables and school packs are now available online.
For enquiries customers are encouraged to visit www.transport.act.gov.au or call 13 17 10
NSW 2022 school travel applications are now open
Applications for student travel in 2022 opened on Tuesday 12 October 2021.

Students who need a School Opal card or travel pass for 2022 can apply now. A new application will need to be submitted if they are applying for a school travel pass for the first time, or if they are requesting an additional travel entitlement as a result of a new shared parental responsibility situation (e.g. joint custody).

Students who change address, school, campus location, or who have repeated a year or received an expiry notification from Transport for NSW for their school travel entitlement should renew or update their details before the end of term 4. This will ensure that schools can endorse applications and current entitlements are updated and remain valid. School Opal card holders will have the changes applied to their existing card.

If a student’s distance eligibility has changed based on their grade the system will automatically update their entitlement if they meet the new criteria. If they do not meet the new eligibility criteria, they will receive an expiry notification via email.

Students who have an entitlement approved under a medical condition that is due to expire will receive a notification advising them to re-apply.

Term Bus Pass holders will receive a notification to re-apply.

Students in the Opal network applying for an Opal card (including a Term Bus Pass) for the first time will receive their Student Opal card at their nominated postal address. Cards will be mailed out from January 2022.

Students living in rural and regional (R&R) areas should receive their travel pass at the start of the new school year from their nominated transport operator. It may come via the school or be sent directly to them at home. Note: some R&R operators do not issue travel passes. Students/parents should confirm with their nominated operator if they do not receive a pass.

School Student Transport Scheme site change
On 1 October 2021 the School Student Transport Scheme (SSTS) information and application portal was moved to transportnsw.info.

Access to the School Portal will also be via transportnsw.info. To navigate to the School Portal from the home page click Tickets and Opal, then School students, then scroll down to Information for school staff and select School portal.

School travel application endorsements
Often applicants completing the online form make mistakes, so we ask that school administrators be mindful of this and avoid endorsing applications with incorrect information.

If you identify an error you can amend the first name, date of birth or grade of a student’s travel application by clicking in the relevant row on the portal. Please ensure you have confirmed the information before making any changes. Refer to page 16 of the School Portal User Guide for further instructions. The user guide is accessible within the School Portal by clicking the arrow next to your username.

If a student’s details cannot be confirmed or they are not yet enrolled please do not endorse the application. By selecting ‘no’ the application will be rejected and the applicant will be informed. They will then need to submit a new application.

In the event that school administrators endorse an application in error, please advise our Concessions team as soon as possible via https://transportnsw.info/contact-us/feedback/passes-concessions-feedback

If school administrators require access to the School Portal, please request an account at  https://transportnsw.info/tickets-opal/ticket-eligibility-concessions/school-student-travel/school-portal#register

If you have staff members who have left the school recently who had access to the school portal, please let us know at https://transportnsw.info/contact-us/feedback/passes-concessions-feedback and select ‘school/operator portal’ and then ‘remove existing user access’ so their access can be removed.

Travel from Term 1 2022
We ask that parents plan ahead and make sure their child knows which service/s to use and has a valid ticket to travel; either a School Opal card or Child/Youth Opal card (within Greater Sydney) or a School Travel Pass (outside Greater Sydney), from the start of the school year.

Applications for the School Student Transport Scheme (SSTS) open at the start of Term 4 2021 for travel in 2022, so parents/students can apply or update details early and be ready for the start of the new school year.

Most students using the Opal network will not need a new Opal card and can continue travelling on their existing card each year.

The start of the year is a difficult period for local bus operators, and students travelling without a valid ticket make service planning and operations increasingly difficult.

We recognise that for some families last minute changes to school enrolments mean they may not have a School Opal card or Travel Pass for the start of term. In the Opal network, we strongly encourage these families to have their children travel on a Child/Youth Opal card until they receive their valid School Opal card. If outside Greater Sydney, parents should contact their local bus operator to discuss their travel needs.

Bus operators are flexible and understanding, particularly at the start of the school year, and will ensure students can travel safely to and from school. But to best support our operators we encourage all students to have a valid ticket, as early as possible, from the start of the school year.

Please also remember that students using Opal cards must tap on and tap off in line with the Student code of conduct and Opal terms of use.
