Principal's Report

Dear Students and Families,

Welcome to the second last edition of DC News for the year, and what a year it has been. It is not over yet though, and there are many end of year events to come. These events include the Year 12 Formal, Year 12 Special Awards & Year 11 Semester Awards, College Musical CHICAGO, and the Year 12 Graduation.

The staff of Dickson College put on a lovely Year 12 Brunch Tuesday morning. It was great to see all the students again, looking quite relaxed now that all the assessments and assignments are finalised. 2020-21 has been a tricky time to be a College student, but this Year 12 group have handled themselves very well and have earned a high degree of respect from the staff at DC. We are all looking forward to the Year 12 Graduation on 15 December at the Canberra Theatre.

This is a reminder to Year 12 students that their Google accounts expire (i.e. will be deleted) early in the new year. So, students should backup information stored in their schools Google drive as soon as possible. Students leaving the College this year need to return their Chromebook to the Library, if they haven't already done so.

It has been great to welcome the community back into the College for recent events, and I look forward to seeing more of our school community in person in the coming weeks. I am particularly looking forward to the College Musical Production of CHICAGO next week. Make sure you secure your tickets! The students have been rehearsing almost every day, the commitment shown has been awe-inspiring. I am very confident that it will be a most fabulous show.  Best of luck, cast and crew!  A big thank you to the teachers involved, especially the Director Kelly Roberts.

There will be one more DC News for 2021 to celebrate our award winners for the year. For now, I would like to say thank you for your support during 2021 and wish all our students the best for the new year.

Regards,

Craig Edwards

S46 Media Showcase!

As a final hoorah for the year we were able to celebrate media students work at the annual S46 Media Showcase! This showcase featured short films from students in year 11 and 12 and was a celebration of the wonderful and creative work from our skilled filmmakers and storytellers!

It was a wonderful night watching exceptional short films from students in the scriptwriting, video production and process to production classes. These films were shown on the big cinema screen at Palace Electric Cinema! Thank you to everyone who came along and supported our media students!

The opening of the Fashion and Arts Show was a wonderful event! Thank you to everyone who came and supported our fantastic students on the night. The artworks looked incredible! Thank you to all the students, parents, staff and members of the community who contributed with flowers and joy from their garden.

Library News

It has been wonderful having students back in the library for term 4, making good use of study spaces and resources. Many students have now returned their library loans and it would be great to have everything back as soon as possible. The library remains open 9am to 4pm Monday to Friday until Thursday 16 December. Students are also reminded that Chromebook computers and chargers need to be returned to the library as soon as possible.

Our Big Bewitching Book Bazaar has been very successful with over $300 being raised for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation. We may continue the sale into early 2022.

Students are encouraged to access ebooks and audiobooks during the holidays. The Sora app has over 7000 ebooks and audiobooks (set-up code: ACT Education Directorate; then enter your school login). It’s a great free resource provided by the ACT Education Directorate, with books for all age groups, kindergarten to adult.

We wish all students happy holidays and our very best wishes to our Year 12 graduates! We hope that reading, research and books (in whatever form) will always be part of your world.

Textiles and Fashion

The Dickson College fashion parade and art show was a great success. Despite the weather restricting the numbers attending and format for the modelling of the outfits, the students problem solved, worked collaboratively, were kind and patient. Behind the scenes there was ‘organised’ chaos, however, when modelling in front of the guests no-one would have guessed! The students all reflected on how they were nervous, excited, exhilarated and an event/experience that they will always cherish.

Also, good news, the Bernina Overlocker has arrived and a welcome buddy to the Bernina Sewing Machine, both will be valued by the students in 2022. These machines were prizes awarded to Dickson College as part of the Wool4school National Teacher award.
