    Last Day of School Year
Meet our Staff:
Hello, my name is Simone Le Lievre and this is my first year at Dickson College. Prior to working here, I taught at Gungahlin College for 8 years, and before that taught in the High School system at Gold Creek High.

At Dickson, I teach across both year 11 and 12 English and have really enjoyed getting to know the amazing students and teachers here. At home, I have two children and the newest addition to our family, my groodle Elsie. My youngest just started school this year, and my eldest is in year 1, so plenty to keep me busy.
In my spare time, I love reading (very surprising for an English teacher), dancing and going to the beach. I wish you all a happy summer break, and look forward to meeting more amazing students and families in 2024!
College Highlights and Successes

Dickson College Major Production 2023 - Tess of the D’Urbervilles

This powerful interpretation of the Thomas Hardy’s novel was beautifully crafted by the Dickson Drama ensemble. The cast and crew combined music, dance, well-designed sound and lighting, a Greek chorus, and powerful performances to create a memorable piece of theatre. The play was double cast and required actors to perform forty-four different roles in each of the six shows. Congratulations to all forty students involved in creating a brilliant, visceral, and captivating theatrical experience.
ANU Classics Museum

Dickson College has developed a very good relationship with the ANU Classics Museum and Ancient History classes visit the collection every semester. The highlight is handling artefacts thousands of years old. The program this semester:

Wed 11 October: Year 12s (studying women in the Classical World)
  • 2.00pm - 2.30pm talk by Associate Professor Caillan Davenport on women on coins (20 minute talk, 10 minute Q & A)
  • 2.30pm - 3.30pm repatriation tour and discussion in the Classics Museum
  • 3.30pm - 4.30pm Greek alphabet and amphora handle workshop in Object-Based Learning Room
Wed 25 October: Year 11s (studying Ptolemaic Egypt and religion)
  • 2.00pm - 2.30pm talk by Dr Tom Geue on ‘the enslaved muse’ – enslaved secretaries and writers who were often behind famous authors – not related to your topic but Tom is available if that sounds interesting to you? (20 minute talk, 10 minute Q & A)
  • 2.30pm - 3.30pm repatriation tour and discussion in the Classics Museum
  • 3.30pm - 4.00pm Greek alphabet and amphora handle workshop in Object-Based Learning Room
Students were particularly interested in objects which were recently discovered to have been stolen by tomb-robbers and smuggled out of Italy in pasta shipments. The artefacts will be repatriated to the Italian government.
Dynamic Performances at the Come Alive Festival 2023

Students studying the unit Innovations in Drama contributed two devised pieces to this years Festival of Museum Theatre at The Mill Theatre. Dear Deary, the story of an Italian doctor who lost his job in the late 1940s in rural Victoria because he was suspected of being a communist and Optimistic Nihilism a response to a portrait in the National Portrait Gallery. Two great performances by: Alexi, Gail, Euan, Keiran, Jude, Angelina, Eleanor, Martyn, Disa, Jasper, Zachary, Ryan, Catherine, Lillia, Abbie, Lily, Oscar, Sophie, Ned, Eloise and Elysia.

The Visitors
By Jane Harrison
Directed by Wesley Enoch
Visitors leave. Right?

Students studying Indigenous Languages and Cultures and Drama attended a performance of the The Visitors at the Canberra Playhouse which included a Q & A with the actors.
On a sweltering day in January 1788, seven clan leaders gather on a sandstone escarpment overlooking the harbour. The attendees, six of them Elders and one new initiate, catch-up, laugh together, share a meal and compare notes. But beyond the friendly banter, protocols, and hospitality, a momentous decision is waiting to be made.

A mysterious fleet of giant nawi is amassing in the harbour and as they creep closer, these seven representatives must choose unanimously: whether to send these strangers on their way or welcome them?

Part of Sydney Opera House’s 50th anniversary program and co-produced by STC and Moogahlin Performing Arts, The Visitors is a riveting, deeply researched insight into one of the most impactful and painful days in Australia’s history.

Dickson College Arts Showcase 2023!

The Dickson College Arts Showcase was a captivating and mesmerising experience, leaving viewers in awe of the incredible talent and creativity of our students. The moment you walked through the doors, it was abundantly clear that this exhibition was a showcase of exceptional quality works of art produced by our students.

The atmosphere buzzed with an overwhelming sense of support, as the college was brimming with students, staff, friends, and families, all gathering to celebrate the passion and excellence within the Arts. The showcase featured a remarkable display of artistic disciplines. It was a true testament to the depth of talent and dedication of our Arts students.

As you ventured through the front foyer, corridors, and canteen area, you couldn't help but be captivated by the stunning artwork on display. Paintings, drawings, sculptures, ceramics, graphic design prints and t-shirts, digital and black-and-white photographs, installations, and film and media creations adorned the spaces. The variety of styles and techniques showcased the remarkable growth and innovation of the student artists.

The music performances throughout the evening were nothing short of exceptional and added an extra layer of excitement to the immersive fashion parade. The drama students, who performed both in the canteen pit and at the Antil Theatre, delivered performances that truly showcased their commitment and professionalism.

It was heartening to see the support from everyone who attended, and we are immensely grateful for your presence. Your support meant the world to the students, and we hope that you enjoyed the display as much as we did.

The Dickson College Arts Showcase was an outstanding celebration of the arts, a testament to the vibrant artistic culture nurtured at Dickson College. Thank you to all who contributed and participated. I want to congratulate the students and an extra special thank you to the Arts staff who worked tirelessly to ensure this event was so successful. We have such a wonderful and dedicated team without whom, this showcase would not be possible.

Warm regards

Reminders for Students

Year 12 students please return your Chromebook
As the school year winds down, it's time to bid farewell to your trusty Chromebook and charger.
If your Chromebook is still in tip-top shape, we'll pass it on to another student. If it's seen better days, we'll retrieve its license and dispose of it in an environmentally friendly way. If you do keep the device, we will have to lock it, and it won't be usable.
So, help us keep it eco-friendly by ensuring all returned devices are recycled responsibly and let’s make every device count!
Students to take data from Gsuite, One Drive and H Drive
Students can login to their ACT Education ICT accounts for 90 days after their enrolment end date. Please back-up your data during this period if you wish to retain any work. Data from H Drive or OneDrive will need to be manually backed-up to a USB drive.

Resources for school leavers

Year 12 students will be making the transition from school to their lives as adults soon. This is an exciting time but for some it can be uncertain as they navigate big life changes.
The School Leavers Resource eKit on the Services Australia website has been updated this year and it contains resources that explain Centrelink payments and how to get started with myGov. There is also an interactive school leavers video that can be found on this web page, it is a fun way to find out about student payments, Medicare and more.
Students can find out more information online at Services Australia - school leavers.

Get planning for 2024 with upcoming student-free days

Student Ambassador Program Push-Up Challenge 2024

The Push-Up Challenge is a unique and fun way for schools to encourage better mental health and wellbeing through connection, physical activity and education. Education is an important tool for breaking down the stigma and fostering open conversations about mental health.

The Student Ambassador Program 2024 is now open for applications for years 10- 12. Student Ambassadors lead school mates, teachers and their school community in The Push-Up Challenge – cheering them on to get fit, have fun and learn about mental health.

Get your school mates together to smash out a heap of push-ups (or alternative exercises) in June 2024 while learning more about mental health. You can even fundraise if you're keen and make a big difference to supporting mental health services and programs.
